Genre-bending violinist Randy Sabien and his eight-piece Fiddlehead Band celebrates the release of his eleventh album, “Soul of a Man.” Pairing a rhythm section fueled by two drummers with a front line of two fiddles and a cello, Sabien creates an upbeat and intricate atmosphere that is pleasing to both the body and the mind. His virtuosic playing touches on traditional fiddle styles and delves into the realms of rock and blues with the occasional journey into trippy space jams reminiscent of the Grateful Dead. Amidst the fiery fiddle breakdowns and mellow blues moments, a strong feeling for Americana underscores his work. His diverse repertoire includes instrumentals by Dickey Betts, Spade Cooley, Bob Wills, Django Reinhardt, the Allman Brothers, Jerry Garcia and many Sabien originals with guest singers.
Randy’s Fiddlehead Band features notable musicians from the Twin Cities and beyond including national fiddle champ, Deena Bistodeau, cellist Ed Willet from the Rickie Lee Jones band, Cliff Wittstruck - guitar, Jeff Bailey-bass, Matt Buchman-keys, Steve Jennings -drums and Steve Faison-drums/percussion. Pat Donohue from A Prairie Home Companion and Judi Donaghy Vinar, noted for her work with Bobby McFerrin and the Wolverines Big Band, will be Randy’s special guests.
